Costway Convertible High Chair Recall: Entrapment and Fall Hazard

On October 22, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 3,332 Costway convertible high chairs (CPSC recall 27-040). The chairs violate the mandatory federal safety standard for high chairs because they do not have a passive crotch restraint. Without it, a child can slip through the opening between the feeding tray and the seat and become entrapped or fall, posing a risk of serious injury or death. The CPSC reports no incidents or injuries so far.

Which high chairs are affected

The recall covers Costway convertible high chairs, which convert into a table and chair set. They were sold in four color combinations: purple and white, red and white, blue and white, and brown and white. The chairs have no lot or batch numbers printed on them, so identification is by the product itself and where and when it was bought.

The recalled chairs were sold from May 2023 through July 2026 for $84 to $100 at Walmart and Target stores nationwide and online at Costway.com. The chairs were manufactured in China.

Why the recall was issued

A passive crotch restraint is the fixed barrier between a child’s legs that keeps the child from sliding down and under the tray, and it works whether or not the harness straps are buckled. The federal safety standard for high chairs has required one for years, because babies slump, squirm, and fall asleep in high chairs, and an unbuckled harness is common in real homes. The recalled Costway chairs were sold without that restraint, so nothing stops a child from slipping into the gap between the tray and the seat, where the child can become trapped or fall to the floor.

What owners should do

The CPSC and Costway urge owners to take these steps:

  1. Stop using the recalled high chair immediately.
  2. Contact Costway for a free replacement high chair. You will be asked to provide a receipt or a photo of the product.
  3. Costway will send a prepaid label to return the recalled chair. Once Costway receives it, a replacement high chair ships free of charge.

Questions about the recall can go to Costway at 844-242-1885 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday), by email at recall@costway.com, or online at costway.com by clicking “Recall” at the bottom of the page.

Why it matters in California

These chairs sold for more than three years through two of the largest retailers in the country, so they are in homes, grandparents’ houses, and daycare rooms across California. A missing restraint is not a defect a parent can spot in the store, because the chair looks complete. If you bought a Costway convertible high chair at Walmart or Target, or received one as a gift, match it against the color combinations above before using it again. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my high chair is recalled?

There are no model or batch numbers to check. The recall covers Costway convertible high chairs that convert into a table and chair set, in purple and white, red and white, blue and white, or brown and white, bought at Walmart, Target, or Costway.com between May 2023 and July 2026.

What should I do with the chair?

Stop using it and contact Costway for a free replacement. Provide a receipt or a photo of the chair, return the recalled chair with the prepaid label Costway sends, and the replacement ships free once Costway receives it.

Do I need my receipt?

No. Costway accepts a receipt or a photo of the product to process the replacement.

What if my child slipped under the tray or was hurt in one of these chairs?

Get medical care first. Then keep the chair in a safe place and do not use it, and take photographs of the chair and any injuries if you can. Under California law, a product liability claim does not depend on whether a recall was issued, and strict liability can extend to every company in the chain of commerce.
